The company will release its first toric contact lens with Water Gradient technology in the UK and Ireland from 1 September
Alcon has announced plans to launch a new contact lens for patients with astigmatism in the UK and Ireland from September. The launch of Dailies Total1 for Astigmatism expands Alcon’s portfolio of daily disposable lenses which includes Dailies Total1 and Dailies Total1 Multifocal. The lens will be available in the UK and Ireland with a full 2300 parameters from 1 September. Estimating that toric is the fastest-growing lens segment of the contact lens market, Alcon said this presents a “large opportunity,” as 47% of patients who need vision correction are astigmatic. Highlighting the importance of comfort in a toric contact lens, the company noted that 42% of lens users with astigmatism experience lens-related dryness. The Dailies Total1 for Astigmatism is the first daily disposable toric lens to feature Alcon’s Water Gradient material, which gradually increases in water content to approach 100% water at the surface. The lens also integrates Alcon’s proprietary SmarTears Technology, which releases an ingredient found naturally in tears that helps to stabilise the lipid layer of the tear film. Rebecca Stoner, head of professional affairs for Alcon UK and Ireland, said: “Many contact lens wearers think that some discomfort or dryness is the price they pay for spectacle independence, and this is especially true for toric wearers.” “Many eye care professionals have long recommended the Dailies Total1 family of products to contact lens patients who demand exceptional comfort, and they can now offer the same innovative Water Gradient material to patients with astigmatism,” Stoner continued. The technologies are combined in Alcon’s Precision Balance 8|4 lens design, also used in the company’s Precision1 and Air Optix plus HydraGlyde toric contact lenses. Dailies Total1 for Astigmatism is designed to settle quickly to the proper on-eye position.
