Venice is asking tourists to use their safe public fountains instead of purchasing single-use plastic water bottles.

Venice runs on tourism. Although the city only has about 50,000 residents, millions of tourists visit Venice each year. Forbes reported that since tourism is so large in the economy, it is responsible for nearly 40 percent of the city’s waste in some seasons.

Amid looming climate change, authorities are attempting to reduce the impact of tourism on the environment and have launched a campaign to encourage tourists to ditch plastic water bottles and use the city’s drinking fountains.

Venice Tap Water, a private project, has also released an accompanying man of the drinking water fountains around the city. The map shows the city’s 126 safe drinking water fountains. The map also shows 60 fountains on other islands in the lagoon, and it is accessible by an app and also on their website.

According to the Washington Post, each American trashes the equivalent of 100 plastic water bottles annually. The United States Population has grown 60 percent since 1960, but our trash grew 200 percent.

Globally, we produce 300 million tons of plastic every year, 78 percent of which is NOT reclaimed or recycled. Around  8.8 million tons of plastic get dumped into the oceans every year! 700 marine animals are faced with extinction due to the threat that plastic poses to them in the form of entanglement, pollution, and ingestion. 50 percent of sea turtles have plastic in their stomachs. By 2050, 99 percent of all seabird species will have ingested plastic waste. According to a study by the World Economic Forum , there will be one tonne of plastic for every three tonnes of fish by 2025, and if things go on business as usual, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050.
