Opinion: The Scott Brown related surprise about the Celtic transfer window

It was inevitable that former Celtic captain Scott Brown was going to go into management at one stage, after all it should be remembered that when he was at Aberdeen last season, it was as a player and a coach.

After he left Aberdeen, a move to manage a club looked on the cards and so it proved when he was appointed as manager of English League One side Fleetwood Town.

The move is an intriguing one for Brown, as he will surely be looking to perform well at the League One club for a few seasons, then get a job at a bigger club, and who knows, perhaps one day in years to come he will end up as the Celtic manager.

That is for the future, but for now it has been perhaps a major surprise of the transfer window so far that Brown hasn’t signed any Celtic players either on loan or on a permanent basis for his club.

It seemed inevitable that was going to happen due to the contacts that the player turned manager presumably has at Celtic Park, but as yet he has not brought in anyone who has played for Celtic. Indeed, the only player that he has signed from a Scottish team is Shaun Rooney on a free transfer from St Johnstone.

Of course, there is still time for Brown to change his transfer policy. There is still another month of the transfer window left to run, and perhaps a lot will depend on how Fleetwood fare in their opening games of the League One season – they start their campaign this weekend with a trip to Port Vale.

Obviously Celtic fans will be keeping an eye on how Brown performs in his first managerial job, after all, he is a man who will be in the frame for the Celtic job at some stage of his career, should he perform well in management for a number of years.

There are some fringe players at Celtic who would benefit from a move to lower league English football, it shouldn’t be forgotten that it helped current Hoops skipper Callum McGregor, who had a very successful loan spell at Notts County, and has been a regular in the Celtic side after that loan spell came to an end.

Perhaps before the transfer window comes to an end, Brown will sign a player from the Hoops. As it stands though, he hasn’t signed as many players from Scotland as would have been expected.
