We are using lots of make-up products and tools in daily life. Have you ever noticed that those can be an aggravating factor to your eye diseases?
How does eye makeup cause eye problems?
1) Eyeliners, Kajal, and Mascara are commonly used eye makeup products. If they are old or expired or infected; they can cause serious eyelid infections like Stye, Blepharitis, Cellulitis, or cause Infections inside the eye like Bacterial or Viral Conjunctivitis.
2) Eye makeup products if applied close to the eyelid margin can clog the Meibomian Gland present in eyelids. This gland provides the oily layer of our tear film and blocking of the Meibomian Gland can deteriorate Dry Eye Symptoms by thinning the tear film and will lead to rapid evaporation of tears. Blocking of this gland is also responsible for recurrent eyelid infections also.
3) Small particles or glitters present in eye makeup also cause an allergic reaction and cause allergic conjunctivitis which can lead to symptoms of itching, watering, and irritation of the eyes.
4) Makeup tools and kits are also breeding grounds for microbes that get transferred to skin and eyes. If not applied & used with care, they can cause abrasions of the cornea also.
5) Contact lenses worn incorrectly or without hygiene are also sources of dangerous & vision-threatening infections like Acanthamoeba Keratitis. If they are worn after eye makeup, they can carry foreign particles inside and can cause corneal injuries.
How to avoid eye problems caused by eye makeup and contact lens
In case you experience dry eyes, inflammation, or any other signs of eye infection after using any eye cosmetics, immediately stop using them. If the problem persists, see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. In order to identify the source of the infection, the eye expert will examine your eyes and accordingly will prescribe treatment.
