Although remakes frequently cause controversy, there are many films out there that the general public may not even be aware are remakes. Goodnight Mommy is one modern illustration, know the story ending explained

The 2014 Austrian movie with the same name, which was also directed by Matt Sobel, was actually remade for the American market.

Main characters this time around are twin brothers who assume their mother has been replaced with a stranger. After she returns home from surgery, played by Naomi Watts, Cameron, and Nicholas Crovetti.

Let’s get the Goodnight Mommy finale explained because it was released on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, September 16, 2022. And it’s bound to raise some questions.

Elias and Lucas worry that their mother is an impostor wearing a bandage. She struggles to recall everything they feel. Furthermore, she should be aware of and insists they stay outside of the barn. Which is obviously the location of a deadly secret.

The boys think their true mother is being held hostage in the barn because of her altered eye colour and tendency to become angry rapidly.

They choose to tie her up as the situation becomes more tense. And are not persuaded despite the fact that her bandages have been removed and she resembles their mother.

Elias, on the other hand, releases her from the restraints and suspects that Lukas may have a strong hold over him. The discovery of the coloured contacts also makes Elias suspect that Lukas has been concealing the truth.

When we find out that Lukas hasn’t actually been by Elias’ side the entire time, it’s a significant revelation. When the mother leads her kid to the barn, it is discovered that the boy actually shot and murdered his brother.

He was having a hard time processing what he had done, so imagining Lukas was just a coping strategy. Grief and loss can be used as an explanation for his mother’s strange behaviour. All of a sudden, her change makes perfect sense.

Elias, on the other hand, is reluctant to face the truth of what has transpired. And throws his mother from a ledge in the barn before fleeing the scene when it catches fire.

And experiences delusions of his mother and brother consoling. Plus, soothing him while observing from a distance. He feels responsible for the deaths of both family members.

In a recent interview with Slash Film, the filmmaker discussed the contrasts between the original and the remake:

“Our movie focuses far more on a single youngster and how he sees the world. And it’s shot to give us that perspective. The thought that had been running through Elias’ head throughout the first 80% of the movie is the source of everything else as well. And he thinks of this circumstance as a horrifying, depraved fantasy.”
